Development and service of drilling fluid

Destined for drilling top layers of geological section of Dnepr-Donetsk depression (DDD) and similar layers in other regions with types of rock like chalk, highly colloidal clay shale and limestone with hydrostatic formation pressure.

HISTORICAL REFERENCE

American researchers were determined relationship between penetration rate and drilling mud density in 50s. This discovery was the impetus for the development of first flushing systems with low level of solids phase. These systems were first introducted at the end of 70s on the territory of Ukraine. The introduction was conducted by collaborators of UkrNIGRI, where have been developed most recipes which will be widespread in the future.

BRNVTF in comparison with traditional bentonite muds provides:

  • dramatic increase of penetration rate and penetration in one BHA run;
  • improving of hydrodynamic conditions of flushing wells and pumping action;
  • improve cross-drilling tool through the borehole;
  • reducing of probability such complications as circulation lost, packing, narrowing of the borehole due to the swelling of clays on the well walls.

Proposed to introduce the flushing system is the latest generation of drilling muds with low level of solids phase. A distinctive feature of the system is the use of AbramiX® as main stabilizer. Acrylic polymer AbramiX® provides the highest inhibiting properties towards argillaceous rocks.

ADVANTAGES

  • The high level of stabilization and immunity to multiple dilution provide a saving of chemicals.
  • High anti-dispersing ability, which provides limit the growth of density and build mud while drilling.
  • Pronounced flocculation effect, which creates favorable conditions for the working of solid control equipment.
  • An inhibiting effect prevents of hydration and swelling processes of argillaceous rocks.
  • High lubricity and anti-sticking properties (Coefficient of mud cake friction at the level of 0.15-0.18 without use of additional lubricating additives). It allows to abandon the use of environmentally hazardous substances, such as oil. The proposed system for all the above items exceed the flushing system on the hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile base widespread in Ukraine.
  • The cost of the proposed system is 20-25% less than the cost of the system on the hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile base.

LIMITATIONS:

  • Filtration loss can increase when the concentration of polyvalent ions in the filtrate of drilling mud more than 0.1% due to water inflow or drilling in cement. In such cases, before using the reagent AbramiX® is necessary to make additional treatment of drilling mud by soda ash.
  • A side effect of the use AbramiX® reagent is a possible to increase rheological and structural-mechanical parameters of the flushing fluid. This effect is especially strong in the primary treatment and due to pollution drilling mud with cuttings. It is necessary to reduce solid content by mud cleaning or dilution with water.

COMPOSITION AND PARAMETERS OF FLUSHING SYSTEM

Drilling fluid composition:

  • AbramiX® - 0,6-0,8% (on dry product);
  • Coal-alkali reagent - 2-3%;
  • Soda ash - up to 0.5% (intermittent treatment after multivalent ions inflow)
  • Graphite - up to 1% (before casing running).
  • Water - the rest.

Parameters of drilling mud:

  • Density - 1090-1160 kg / m3,
  • Funnel Viscosity - 20-35 sec.,
  • Gel - 0 / 0-3 / 9 DPA
  • Filtration loss - 6-9 cm 3/30 min.,
  • pH - 9.5-10.5.
